Abstract

Recent advances in technology have created a new class of small, low-cost, low-power, and intelligent sensor devices with sensing, computation, and wireless communication capabilities. In the future, such intelligent sensor devices may be extensively embedded into our living environment.

Wireless sensor networks and sensor Grids are exciting emerging technologies with great potential to revolutionize many segments of the economy and our life. In this talk, I will introduce the concept of wireless sensor networks and outline some of their important applications. I will also explain the concept of sensor Grids, which extend the Grid computing paradigm to the sharing of sensor resources in wireless sensor networks. Finally, I will discuss the relevance of wireless sensor networks and sensor Grids to the future IT landscape in Singapore.

Biodata

Dr. Lim Hock Beng is program director of the Intelligent Systems Centre at Nanyang Technological University. He received his BS in Computer Engineering, MS in Electrical Engineering, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MS in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University. Swarthmore College

Course name: CPSC 085. Distributed Systems
Phone: (610) 328-8000
Website: http://www.swarthmore.edu/cc_computerscience.xml

Description:

This course covers a broad range of topics related to distributed and cluster computing. Distributed systems consist of a collection of computers connected by a network. The computers in a distributed system run special software that allows them to transparently share computing resources and data. We will read and discuss recent and classic research papers on the theory and implementation of distributed and cluster computing systems. In addition, students will have the opportunity to examine one or two topics in depth through a class presentation of a specific topic and through a semester-long project related to distributed computing. Possible topics include networking, parallel programming paradigms, distributed state, distributed coordination and agreement, fault tolerance, authentication and security, scheduling, load balancing, distributed file systems, Web computing, the Grid, peer-to-peer systems, cluster systems, distributed operating systems, and distributed database systems.

The department's new gigabit cluster is available for course programming assignments and projects.
